What did you talk about at the barbershop or hairdresser’s the other day?

Sports?  The weather?  How about your career? How much does your hairdresser, your banker, your cleaner know about what you do? It could be the track to your next great job.

Malcolm Gladwell, in Tipping Point, called people like these “connectors.”  Who are the connectors in your circles?  Maybe they are your banker or cleaner, but maybe it’s a colleague who seems to know everyone.

Think — who are the connectors you need to get to know better?

Pick up the phone.

You do it all the time for work, now do it once for you. Call someone you want to get to know, but it has to be another nonprofit leader. Make an appointment for breakfast, lunch or to meet after work at a Starbucks.

What will you talk about? Who cares? At least you’re building a relationship so that when you need to reach out, someone will be there to touch. And there will be plenty to discuss — starting with the weather, then going on to the latest annual fund work or the grant proposal pending.  Who knows, maybe you’ll talk about openings in another organization. Just talk for you.
